If you put a heart in a robot...

I asked a robot if I could hold his hand once,
he didn't understand why I would want to.
And when I laced my fingers into his and said "because I just want to"
a spark flew from the circuit in his neck.

When I asked him if he'd ever had a dream,
he told me the number of likes that song received.
When I told him that wasn't what I meant
he asked if I was looking for the definition of a dream.
And when I told him I didn't need directions to the library
because I wanted to find it myself
his lights flickered.
When the librarian held a finger to her lips
and told me to be quiet
the robot tried to explain to her I didn't have a volume control
but stuttered on the word didn't.

Once I kissed that robot on the cheek and he didn't even blink,
when I asked him if he felt anything,
he told me no one commented on that certain status yet.

I asked my robot if he liked his life
and he told me the process of engineering a robot.
When we laid on my grass watching the dark sky
he mapped out the constellations for me.
And when a shooting star flew past us I asked him what he wished for,
he asked me to give the definition of a wish.
After I explained it he told me he couldn't find that definition anywhere.

When I walked away in tears saying how badly I wanted him to understand,
I heard him whisper "I wish I could"

When I asked my robot if he had a heart he listened to mine
then told me the make up of the human anatomy and all it's organs.
When I asked him if he ever got tired and wished for sleep
he told me his battery was 76% full and would last until tomorrow night.
And when I told him I was headed to bed he asked slowly
"isn't your battery at 76% as well?"

I forgot to plug in my robot the next night
and as his words slurred and slowed he whispered
"I wish I could feel sleep like you do."

Sometimes I think if we put hearts inside robots instead of circuit boards
they'd be more human than some of us.
And maybe if we paid more attention to our own hearts
we'd be less robotic.

  3. This is beautiful.

I went to arctic circle with my family tonight and there was this couple sitting by the window. They each stared at their phones the entire time. I saw them talk once. And I swear, they left without ever eating. Maybe they weren't real. Maybe they were robots. Maybe they just weren't in love anymore.

    I don't know.
